NTU Tip of the Month
Summer time for many of us means travel, outings, family, food, and fun. At times we may get so caught up in the festivities that we neglect our spiritual, emotional and physical health. Remember your spiritual, emotional, and physical health are valuable. Especially green leafy vegetables.
1. Eat properly
Pay attention to what you eat during the hot summer months. Too many high caloric foods and carbohydrates can make one lethargic and irritable, especially when it’s hot. Drink plenty of water to flush your system and keep hydrated.
2. Drink Water
Drink lots of water to flush your system and keep hydrated- the cleaner the water the better. Soft drinks, juice, and beer do not replace water. Remember, your body is two thirds water. Your system eliminates toxins more efficiently when it is properly hydrated.
3. Avoid/Limit Alcohol
The misuse and abuse of alcohol can be harmful at anytime during the year. The potential to induce more harm is increased with more opportunities to drink and drive and/ or have pool accidents. Discourage yourself, family and friends from drinking excessively during the summer months.
4. Exercise
Attend to your body. Exercise does not have to be vigorous to be effective. Do something. Walk, stretch, dance, but do something to evaluate and regulate your breathing, stimulate your circulation, support your system and massage your muscles and organs.
5. Commune with Nature
Spend time out doors in nature, if your health is not compromised. Staying in air conditioning limits the body’s ability to adjust to the weather/climate. It is even good to work or work outside as long as you are hydrated and adequately covered from the sun’s rays.
6. Start a Garden
Grow something to eat. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. It can be as simple as a tomato plant in a box in an apartment window. Growing food helps to remind us of our relationship with the earth and what it takes to live in harmony with nature.
7. Spend time with people you care about and who care about you.
Positive interaction between family and friends strengthens the immune system, reinforces values and provides support, direction and a sense of purpose.
8. Rest, reflect and reprioritize
Take a break and take some time to rest in between being with family and friends and traveling. Try not to pack too much in one day simply because it stays lighter longer.
9. Pray and/or Meditate Daily.
Prayer is talking with the Divine and meditation is listening to Divine. Together they help keep us humble and connected and provide us a sense of security and direction in our lives.
10. Learn Something
Increase your knowledge and sense of self worth by either formally or informally studying something. Learning increases your capacity to learn. Learn about your world and your environment and ultimately you learn about yourself.
